What Does Success Mean For You?
By: Ray Montie
What does success look like for you?
What does success mean? Success is the condition or state of meeting a certain set of expectations. It can also be seen as the antithesis of failure. Individual perspectives can influence success standards and they can differ greatly between individuals.
In business, there are two major approaches to defining success. The first is called the sales approach. Sales leaders define success based on revenue numbers. This is the second, called performance approach. Many sales executives believe that people who are successful have goals. Achieving those goals, they feel, helps people to do better in their lives and, in turn, to become a successful person.
However, for most people the line between success or failure is blurred. To be truly successful, individuals need to be happier with what they are doing, and the circumstances in which they find themselves. For this reason, when we talk about success, it is important to define what “success” means to you.
Tony Robbins is a motivational speaker, consultant and author who believes success can mean different things for different people. Many people think success means simply being rich. Others define success as being in control and earning the most money possible. They also want to have as many friends as they can.
In order to truly understand what constitutes success, it is important to ask ourselves some hard questions. What is the standard that we measure our achievements against? What is it that makes us feel happy? What makes us happy? Although these may sound too personal or abstract to some, they will help you define success and happiness. Once you have done this, you will also be able to understand how your goals relate to your own personal happiness and how your own definition of success relates to your goals.
For many different reasons, some people will claim that they feel very fulfilled when they are a success. Some people feel fulfilled because they can afford the items they desire, others feel satisfied because they have a loved one, a child or another family member they care about. Others may feel happy because they are successful due to their athletic achievements. While there may indeed be some validity to the fact that some people do enjoy such things as holidays, a relaxing vacation, etc., it does not mean that for most people, the term success itself encompasses such unfulfilling experiences. For example, most people feel fulfilled when helping others or doing well in their jobs.
Success, in the end, is really a very personal concept. Success may be defined as having the ability to spend what you want. Others may be more ambitious and have more direct financial implications. Others may say success is being satisfied with what they do. However, no matter what kind of success you have, you will find that there are many different things that you can look at to determine whether or not you are a success or not. It might help you to look at what success is for you and the success definitions of others in your life.
In some cases, you may feel like you know what success means for you, but if you are still unsure of this or of how to put your self-worth into a positive light, then it may be a good idea for you to consider talking to a coach, seeking professional assistance, or reading about successful people (including their accomplishments and their successes and failures). Once you know what success means for you in your life, you can then take the time to pursue this goal in a healthy and meaningful way, as opposed to simply trying to get by in life. Many people become so focused on what they want or how much they have, that they forget that success really means finding ways to help the world. Your achievements and success could be used to help others feel valued.
